Cinnamon Bark
Has some of the highest amounts of antioxidants in nature. The total measured ORAC (Oxygen radical absorbance capacity) value is 267,536 TE/100g (micromole Trolox Equivalent per 100 grams), which is many hundred times more than other plants. Trolox equivalency is used as a benchmark for the antioxidant capacity.
Cinnamon comes from the bark of trees native to China, India, and Southeast Asia. A popular cooking spice in many cultures for centuries, cinnamon also has a long history of use as a folk or traditional medicine. For example, many ancient societies used cinnamon for bronchitis, gastrointestinal problems, loss of appetite, control of diabetes, as well as a variety of other conditions, all with good merit.
There are so many beneficial compounds found in cinnamon to even list. One of them being Eugenol and is used in perfumes, food flavorings and essential oils. It is also used as a local antiseptic. Eugenol can be combined with zinc oxide to form zinc oxide eugenol which has restorative and prosthodontic applications in dentistry. For example, zinc oxide eugenol is used for root canal sealing’s. Another interesting compound found in cinnamon is Cinnamaldehyde and has been found to have anti-coagulant properties (prevents blood-clotting), prevents platelet clogging inside the blood vessels, and thereby helps prevent stroke, peripheral arterial and coronary artery diseases.
Cinnamon is high in essential nutrients and vitamins, such as Vitamin K, Iron, Calcium and Manganese as well as several antibacterial compounds. Researchers from the School of Biological Sciences in the University of Hong Kong and the Division of Applied Science in Auckland University of New Zealand conducted a study with cinnamon stick extract and evaluated its antibacterial effects. The study showed that cinnamon stick and its major components ((E)-cinnamaldehyde and proanthocyanidins) possessed significant antibacterial properties against five common pathogenic and fecal indicator bacteria’s.
