Calendula
Is a yellow flower that may help combat dry skin, dermatitis, eczema, skin rash, insect bites, athlete’s foot and varicose veins, due to its high content of flavonoids, chemicals containing antioxidants, antiviral, anti-genotoxic and anti-inflammatory properties.
Ancient cultures recognized and praised the healing properties of Calendula, and it is still important in alternative medicine today. Ancient Romans used it in many rituals and ceremonies, wearing the flowers as crowns or garlands. Calendula flowers are sacred in India and have been used to decorate the statues of Hindu deities since early times. In some of the earliest medical writings, calendula was recommended for treating ailments of the digestive tract. It was used to detoxify the liver and gall bladder. During the American Civil War and World War I, Calendula was used on the battlefields for dressing wounds to stop bleeding and prevent infection with its anti-hemorrhagic and antiseptic properties.
Calendula today is being investigated for its anti-cancer and tissue repairing properties. According to the Fedkovich Chernivtsi State University in Ukraine there has been evidence of success in treating certain cancers like Heren's Carcinoma. In one small study of about 250 women undergoing radiation therapy after surgery for breast cancer, a commercial calendula ointment reduced the amount of skin irritation better than another commonly-used commercial preparation. Women who used the calendula ointment also reported less pain from the radiation. The Universitatea de Medicina si Farmacie has treated a variety of skin diseases with positive treatment results of skin ulcerations, eczema and juvenile acne. Chemicals found in the flower speed up wound-healing by several actions that include increasing blood flow to the affected area and promoting the production of collagen proteins.
